Racing endorsements for Asia's premier regattas — King's Cup, Phuket Raceweek, LIRR, and the offshore racing circuit
Asia hosts some of the world's most spectacular offshore racing — the King's Cup Regatta in Phuket, Phuket Raceweek, the Langkawi International Royal Regatta, and a growing calendar of offshore and inshore events. Standard recreational yacht policies exclude racing entirely. A racing endorsement is required before any competitive event — and getting it right means understanding what the Notice of Race requires, what hull cover the endorsement includes, and how to arrange the certificate in the format race committees accept.
Why Racing Requires a Separate Insurance Endorsement
Marine underwriters define racing as a materially different risk from cruising. In a crowded race start — 80 boats on the same line, all sailing to weather in 18 knots — the probability of a collision is orders of magnitude higher than in normal cruising conditions. Start sequence collisions are the most common source of racing liability claims. Downwind leg incidents — gybing accidents, broaches, crew members overboard — add to the risk profile. Underwriters price this risk separately, which is why standard recreational policies contain blanket racing exclusions. A racing endorsement adds back coverage for the race period. It does not convert your annual policy into racing cover permanently — it covers the specified event or specified racing period only. The endorsement also specifies what is covered during racing: typically third-party liability is the minimum, with hull cover during racing an optional addition that must be confirmed in the endorsement wording.
Asia's Major Racing Events and Their Requirements
Each of Asia's premier regattas has specific insurance requirements set out in the Notice of Race. The King's Cup Regatta (Phuket, late November): third-party liability during racing minimum USD 300,000; racing endorsement certificate required at registration. Phuket Raceweek (July): third-party liability minimum USD 300,000; same documentation requirement. Langkawi International Royal Regatta (Malaysia, November): third-party liability minimum USD 300,000 (verify current requirements in the NoR each year). Hong Kong to Vietnam Race, Rolex China Sea Race, and similar offshore events typically require USD 500,000 TPL minimum as offshore events carry higher risk exposure. IRC-class racing in the Asia-Pacific region requires valid IRC rating certificates in addition to racing insurance — confirm both are in place before registration. Multihull events may have higher insurance requirements due to the higher damage potential from catamaran collision incidents.
Per-Event vs Annual Racing Extensions
Two types of racing endorsement are available. Per-event endorsements cover a single named regatta. They are more economical for owners who race once or twice per year. The endorsement specifies the regatta name and dates, the coverage during the event, and any conditions. Annual racing extensions cover all competitive racing throughout the policy year — useful for owners who race regularly, participate in club racing series, or enter multiple regattas. The annual extension typically costs 10%–25% more than a per-event endorsement for a single event but becomes more economical if three or more events are planned. For delivery skippers or owners who sometimes race others' vessels, stand-alone crew cover products exist separate from vessel policies. Arrange the endorsement type that matches your actual racing calendar — per-event for occasional racers, annual extension for committed race participants.
Hull Cover During Racing: The Overlooked Question
The racing endorsement minimum required by most Asian regattas covers third-party liability. This protects you if you collide with another vessel and damage it. It does not cover damage to your own vessel in the same collision. Many racing sailors assume their standard hull policy covers racing damage — it does not. The racing exclusion in the hull section of the standard policy applies equally to hull damage during racing as it does to liability. An optional hull racing extension adds coverage for hull damage arising during competitive racing. This typically adds 0.1%–0.3% to the hull premium for the racing period. Given the collision risk in a tight Asian fleet race, the hull racing extension is strongly recommended. Check the endorsement wording explicitly: does it extend TPL only, or does it also extend hull cover to racing damage? This is the most important question to ask your broker when arranging the endorsement.

Frequently Asked Questions
What TPL minimum does the King's Cup require?
The King's Cup Notice of Race requires third-party liability cover of at least USD 300,000 in force during all racing days. The certificate must be presented at the race committee registration desk before racing begins. USD 500,000 is recommended for vessels above 45 feet.
How far in advance should I arrange racing insurance?
At least four to six weeks before the regatta. Race registration typically closes several weeks before the event, and the insurance certificate must be in hand at registration. Allow additional time if you are arranging racing cover for the first time or if your vessel has any unusual characteristics that require underwriter assessment.
Does racing insurance cover damage to my own mast or sails?
Hull cover during racing — if included in the endorsement — typically covers accidental damage including collision-caused rig damage. Spinnaker blowouts, sail tears from chafe or overloading, and routine gear failure are often excluded even with hull racing cover. Read the endorsement wording for specific equipment exclusions.
Can I get racing insurance for a charter yacht I am racing?
Yes, but it requires coordination between the vessel owner's insurance and any crew or charterer involvement. Some racing policies are written for the skipper/competitor rather than the vessel owner. For races where you are sailing a vessel owned by someone else, confirm whether the owner's racing endorsement covers you as a guest skipper, or whether you need a separate competitor's liability policy.
Is the LIRR racing cover the same as Phuket Raceweek cover?
The minimum requirements are similar but the Langkawi International Royal Regatta Notice of Race is issued separately each year and requirements can change. Always check the current year's NoR for the specific event. Do not assume that a certificate valid for Phuket Raceweek automatically satisfies LIRR requirements without confirming the LIRR coverage dates and event name are shown.
