Racing Insurance Requirements at Asian Regattas
Asia's major sailing regattas uniformly require racing insurance as a condition of entry. Phuket Raceweek, the King's Cup Regatta (Phuket), the Langkawi International Royal Regatta (LIRR), Raja Ampat Regatta, and others all require proof of insurance covering at minimum third-party liability during racing, with minimum limits specified in entry documentation.
The typical requirement is third-party liability of USD 300,000–500,000 during racing, covering damage to other competitors and race infrastructure. Some regattas require racing hull cover as well, covering your own vessel during competition.
For vessels that race regularly, adding a racing endorsement to an annual policy is more cost-effective than purchasing per-regatta cover. For occasional racers, a per-event endorsement is available from most specialist yacht insurers.
Phuket hosts two major annual regattas: - Phuket Raceweek (July): Typically 80+ yachts, offshore and coastal racing - King's Cup Regatta (December): Asia's oldest and most prestigious regatta, 100+ entries
The Langkawi International Royal Regatta in Malaysia is held annually in November and draws significant international participation.
Raja Ampat Regatta in Indonesia combines sailing competition with the extraordinary diving of West Papua, running in October–November season.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my standard yacht policy cover racing?
Almost certainly not — standard policies explicitly exclude racing and competition. You need a racing endorsement or separate racing cover for regatta participation. Check your policy exclusions before entering.
What insurance do I need to enter Phuket Raceweek?
Third-party liability of at least USD 300,000 during racing is required. Contact us to add a racing endorsement to your existing policy or arrange stand-alone racing cover for specific events.
