Phuket Raceweek is one of Asia's premier offshore racing events — held annually in July, attracting 80+ yachts from across the Asia-Pacific region. Whether you're racing IRC, performance cruising, or multihull classes, entry requires valid racing insurance. Here's what you need.
What Phuket Raceweek Requires
Entry regulations for Phuket Raceweek specify:
- Third-party liability cover for racing: minimum USD 300,000
- The cover must be in force during the racing period (not just your standard cruising cover)
- Certificate of insurance must be presented on registration day
Standard yacht insurance policies exclude racing. Your regular hull and liability cover does not extend to regatta participation. A racing endorsement or stand-alone racing cover is required.
Types of Racing Cover
Racing endorsement on existing policy: The most common approach. A per-event or annual racing extension is added to your existing yacht policy. The endorsement extends your third-party liability to cover racing activities and may also extend hull cover (check your endorsement — hull racing cover is not always included).
Stand-alone racing policy: A separate policy just for the regatta. More appropriate if you race occasionally with different vessels.
What the Racing Cover Includes
Third-party liability racing cover responds to: - Collision with another racing yacht or bystander vessel - Damage to marks and race infrastructure - Bodily injury to other racing sailors from a collision - Damage to spectator vessels
Hull damage during racing is a separate question — confirm with your insurer whether your hull policy extends to racing damage or whether the racing endorsement includes hull cover.
The King's Cup Regatta
The King's Cup, held in December in Phuket Bay, has similar insurance requirements. Third-party liability during racing at a minimum of USD 300,000 is required. As Asia's oldest and most prestigious regatta (established 1987), the King's Cup attracts 100+ entries and strict compliance with entry requirements.
Langkawi International Royal Regatta
The LIRR in Malaysia (November) requires third-party liability racing cover. Check the specific LIRR Notice of Race for current minimum limits — these are updated annually.
