Marina cover, Named Storm protection, and racing endorsements for vessels based in and visiting Phuket

Phuket is Asia's sailing capital, home to three world-class international marinas and the most active regatta calendar in Southeast Asia. Whether you're berthed at Royal Phuket Marina for the season, anchoring in Phang Nga Bay, or planning your first season in Thai waters, getting yacht insurance right for Phuket means understanding both the marina requirements and the specific risks of the Andaman Sea.

Marina Insurance Requirements in Phuket

All three of Phuket's major marinas require evidence of hull insurance and third-party liability as conditions of berthing. Royal Phuket Marina requires third-party liability of at least USD 300,000 and hull cover for vessels on annual contracts. Yacht Haven Grand Marina — Thailand's premier superyacht facility — requires USD 300,000–500,000 liability depending on vessel size, and hull cover. Ao Po Grand Marina has similar requirements. Ao Chalong anchorage, while not a formal marina, is used by hundreds of vessels throughout the season — while there are no mandatory insurance requirements at anchor, the practical reality of sailing in a busy, reef-studded area without third-party cover is imprudent. Your insurance certificate must be in English, show the vessel name, the policy period, and the liability limit. Some marinas require the certificate to note the marina as an additional interested party — confirm requirements with your marina before arrival.

Named Storm Cover on the Andaman Sea

Thailand's Andaman Sea — Phuket's sailing ground — is within the Western Pacific tropical cyclone system. The southwest monsoon season (May to October) brings the highest storm risk, though Named Storm events have occurred outside this window: Typhoon Phabuk struck Thailand's southern coast in January 2019, the first direct tropical cyclone landfall on Thailand in 30 years. Standard hull policies exclude Named Storm damage — damage from any tropical cyclone that receives an official name from the Thai Meteorological Department or relevant authority is not covered unless a Named Storm endorsement has been added. The endorsement specifies conditions during storm warnings — typically the vessel must be in a recognised marina berth, on an approved mooring, or hauled out of the water. Named Storm endorsement for Phuket-based vessels adds approximately 0.2%–0.5% to the annual hull premium. Against the risk of a total or partial loss in a direct storm hit, this is a straightforward calculation.

Racing Endorsements for Phuket Raceweek and the King's Cup

Phuket's regatta calendar is one of Asia's busiest: Phuket Raceweek in July, the King's Cup Regatta in late November, plus numerous local races and cruising rallies throughout the season. Standard recreational policies exclude competitive racing — your hull and liability cover does not extend to regatta participation. A racing endorsement must be added before the event. For the King's Cup and Phuket Raceweek, the minimum third-party liability during racing required by the Notice of Race is USD 300,000. USD 500,000 or more is recommended for larger vessels or those racing in IRC divisions where the fleet is tightly packed. Per-event racing endorsements cover a single named regatta; annual racing extensions cover all racing throughout the policy year. Contact your insurance advisor at least six weeks before the race to allow time for the endorsement to be issued and the certificate to be prepared in the format required by the race committee.

Blue-Water Policies for Vessels Sailing Beyond Thailand

Many Phuket-based vessels make seasonal passages to Malaysia, Indonesia, the Maldives, or the Philippines. Thai-market policies (QBE Thailand, AIG Thailand) do not extend to these waters. An international blue-water policy from Lloyd's of London, Pantaenius, Chubb, or Markel International covers the full Southeast Asian region on a single certificate — eliminating the need for separate country policies as you move between Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Blue-water policies are also the correct solution for the Indonesian CAIT permit, which requires insurance documentation explicitly covering Indonesian territorial waters. A Thai-market certificate will not satisfy the CAIT requirement. For vessels planning the classic Phuket–Langkawi–Bali circuit, an international policy is not optional — it is the only approach that provides seamless coverage across the full itinerary.

Frequently Asked Questions

What minimum liability does Royal Phuket Marina require?

Royal Phuket Marina requires third-party liability cover of at least USD 300,000 as a condition of berthing. Hull insurance is additionally required for vessels on annual berth contracts. Confirm current requirements directly with the marina, as minimum limits are reviewed periodically.

Is Named Storm cover included in standard Phuket yacht insurance?

No. Named Storm cover is an optional endorsement that must be specifically added to your policy. Standard hull and liability policies — whether from local Thai markets or international insurers — contain Named Storm exclusions. Confirm the Named Storm position on any policy you are considering before purchasing.

Can I arrange yacht insurance same-day in Phuket?

In some cases yes — specialist brokers in Phuket can arrange cover for straightforward recreational vessel applications within 24–48 hours. Racing endorsements for imminent events can sometimes be arranged faster. Complex risks, older vessels, or high insured values may require more time as underwriters assess the application.

Does Phuket yacht insurance cover sailing to Langkawi or Bali?

Thai-market policies typically do not cover Malaysian or Indonesian waters. If you're sailing to Langkawi, Bali, or beyond, you need either an international blue-water policy that covers the full route, or a geographic extension to your existing policy that explicitly adds the additional countries. Ask your insurer or broker before departure.

How much does yacht insurance cost in Phuket?

Rates in Phuket typically run 1.0%–2.0% of agreed hull value annually for sailing yachts, and 1.2%–2.5% for motor yachts. A sailing yacht insured at USD 150,000 might pay USD 1,800–3,500 per year for a comprehensive policy including hull, liability to USD 500,000, and Named Storm. Charter and commercial vessels attract higher rates due to passenger liability loading.
