Phuket has developed into Asia's most mature yachting market over the past 30 years, and insurance provision has kept pace. The island hosts the region's most experienced marine surveyors, access to Lloyd's underwriters via Thailand's licensed marine brokers.

For visiting blue-water sailors, Phuket is typically the first port of entry after the Red Sea or Indian Ocean passage. Thai customs grant a 30-day cruising permit on arrival at Ao Chalong, extendable through agents in Chalong or downtown Phuket. This permit period aligns well with an annual policy renewal cycle — many owners time their insurance renewal to coincide with arrival in Thailand.

Local marinas — Royal Phuket Marina in Boat Lagoon, Yacht Haven in the north, and Ao Chalong's extensive swinging moorings — all require proof of third-party liability as a condition of berthing. The standard minimum accepted across Phuket marinas is THB 1,000,000 (approximately USD 27,000), though underwriters typically quote at USD 1,000,000 or above for international cruising policies.

The Phuket King's Cup Regatta, held annually in late November/early December, is Asia's most prestigious offshore sailing event. It draws 150+ yachts across divisions from IRC to multihull and cruising classes. Race organizers require evidence of third-party liability cover of at least USD 1,000,000 per occurrence, and hull cover must not exclude racing.

Standard cruising policies almost universally exclude racing. Our advisors can arrange a racing endorsement added to your existing policy, or a standalone racing policy for the duration of the regatta. Coverage periods are typically 7–10 days. The endorsement removes the racing exclusion, covers collision liability during racing manoeuvres, and extends to include salvage of the vessel if disabled during a race.

Other Phuket regattas that require insurance confirmation include the Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek (typically July) and the Phuket Multihull Regatta (May). The Andaman Sea's summer conditions — lighter trade winds and predictable afternoon breezes — make the off-season regattas particularly popular with resident yachts.

The Andaman Sea sits within the North Indian Ocean cyclone basin. While Phuket itself is rarely directly hit by tropical cyclones (the Malaysian peninsula provides a significant natural shield), the period from May to November sees elevated swell, unpredictable squalls, and the risk of tropical depressions tracking from the Bay of Bengal.

Insurers divide the risk into two distinct categories: Named Storm cover (explicit Tropical Cyclone/Typhoon add-on) and standard storm cover. A standard policy typically covers storm damage from unnamed weather systems but excludes damage arising from a named cyclone or typhoon. Given Phuket's basin exposure, Named Storm cover is strongly recommended.

For vessels remaining in Phuket through the wet season, a formal lay-up agreement — documenting shore storage or hard stand position, removal of sails and electronics, and hull securing — qualifies the vessel for a lay-up discount of 20–40% on the hull premium. Underwriters require a survey of the lay-up facility and confirmation of storm-tie procedures.
