Phuket is unquestionably Asia's sailing capital. The concentration of marinas, marine services, and sailing events in and around the island is unmatched anywhere in Southeast Asia. But insurance requirements for sailing in Thailand have specific considerations that every yacht owner should understand before arriving.
What Thai Marinas Require
All major marinas in Phuket require valid third-party liability insurance as a condition of berthing. Royal Phuket Marina, Yacht Haven Grand Marina, Phuket Boat Lagoon, and Ao Po Grand Marina all have insurance requirements. The minimum typically required is USD 100,000 third-party liability — but USD 300,000-500,000 is increasingly standard at premium facilities.
Your insurance certificate must be in English, clearly state the vessel name, current policy period, and liability limit. Some marinas require the certificate to name the marina as an additional interested party.
Named Storm: The Critical Question
Thailand's Andaman Sea (Phuket side) is affected by the southwest monsoon from approximately May to October, with tropical storm risk highest June-September. The Gulf of Thailand (Samui side) is most exposed December-February.
Standard storm cover excludes Named Storm damage. If a tropical depression is officially named by the Thai Meteorological Department (becoming a tropical storm or typhoon) and damages your vessel, standard cover won't respond. Named Storm endorsement adds this protection.
For vessels staying in Thailand year-round, Named Storm cover is essential. For vessels arriving November-April on the Andaman coast only, the risk of a Named Storm event is low but not zero. Most experienced Thailand-based sailors consider Named Storm coverage mandatory regardless of season.
Phuket Raceweek and Racing Cover
Phuket Raceweek (July) and the King's Cup Regatta (December) both require racing insurance as a condition of entry. Standard yacht policies exclude racing — you need a racing endorsement for regatta participation. Third-party liability of at least USD 300,000 during racing is typically required.
Racing endorsements are available as per-event additions to annual policies. If you race more than once per year, an annual racing extension is more cost-effective.
