Getting There
The practical access point is Sorong, the main city in West Papua, accessible by direct flights from Jakarta, Makassar, and Manado. Most sailing yachts arrive in Raja Ampat via the CAIT permit from Bali, sailing northeast through the Banda Sea or Maluku Islands. The passage from Bali to Raja Ampat is approximately 1,200 nautical miles — plan for 10-14 days of sailing depending on conditions.
The Permit Requirements
Beyond the standard CAIT, Raja Ampat requires:
Marine Park Entry Card: Obtained in Waisai (the regional capital of Raja Ampat Regency) on arrival. Approximately USD 100 per person, valid 12 months. Must be purchased before entering the marine park — rangers patrol and check cards.
Vessel Permit: Also obtained from the Waisai permit office. Covers the vessel's operation within Raja Ampat waters.
Rangers regularly conduct vessel checks throughout the marine park. Operating without valid permits results in significant fines and potential vessel detention.
The Sailing Conditions
Raja Ampat's sailing conditions are demanding:
Currents: Very strong currents run through the passes between islands, particularly in Dampier Strait (between Waigeo and Batanta) and Gam Island passages. Careful tide timing is essential — passage through the main straits near slack water.
Season: May-October is the southeast monsoon season — best conditions with manageable winds and good visibility. December-March (northwest monsoon) brings rough seas from the Pacific and significantly reduced visibility.
Anchorages: Most anchorages are in excellent holding (sand and mud) inside the protected lagoons. The karst islands provide good shelter from swell in most directions. A stern anchor helps position the vessel correctly in coral-rich areas.
Insurance for Raja Ampat
Your CAIT insurance must explicitly cover Indonesian waters including West Papua/Raja Ampat. The wreck removal coverage required for CAIT is especially important here — Raja Ampat's coral reef system is one of the most environmentally sensitive in the world, and wreck removal orders in this area would be strictly enforced.
Medical evacuation coverage for Raja Ampat requires careful planning. Sorong has the nearest hospital with any significant capacity. Serious emergencies require evacuation to Makassar or Singapore — air transport from Sorong to Singapore costs approximately USD 30,000-50,000.

The highlights of Raja Ampat are the dive sites, but the sailing scenery is equally remarkable:
Wayag: The most photographed location in Raja Ampat — mushroom-shaped karst islands viewed from the summit of the highest point, reached by a 30-minute climb. Accessible by dinghy from your anchorage.
Pianemo: Similar to Wayag but less visited. A 20-minute dinghy ride from a protected anchorage.
Arborek Village: A Papuan fishing village on stilts — friendly community, simple homestays, traditional dance performances. A model for low-impact tourism.
Cape Kri: One of the world's richest fish census sites. A short dive reveals more species than anywhere else on Earth.
