Komodo & Labuan Bajo

Komodo National Park sits in one of Indonesia's most remote accessible regions. The nearest BASARNAS (Indonesian Search and Rescue) station with helicopter capability is in Labuan Bajo, approximately 40km west of Komodo Island. Response times in emergency situations are measured in hours, not minutes.

This remoteness shapes the insurance requirements in two important ways. First, salvage costs for a vessel aground or disabled in Komodo can be extremely high — Indonesian salvage vessels from Labuan Bajo charge commercial rates, and in difficult current scenarios, multiple tug attempts may be required. A policy with unlimited or high-value salvage provision is essential.

Second, crew medical emergencies in Komodo require evacuation. The park's ranger stations have basic first aid but no surgical capability. A serious injury requires helicopter evacuation to Labuan Bajo and then fixed-wing transfer to Denpasar or Singapore. This cost can reach USD 50,000–200,000 depending on the severity and the evacuation chain required. Medical evacuation insurance — either as a standalone policy or bundled with a comprehensive cruising package — should be carried by all vessels transiting Komodo.
