Galle's position at the southern tip of Sri Lanka makes it one of the world's most important passage-making waypoints. The harbour sits at the junction of the Indian Ocean's major blue-water routes: westbound from Southeast Asia to the Red Sea and Mediterranean, eastbound from Europe and the Red Sea to India and onwards to Southeast Asia, and northbound to the Maldives and India.

Insurance for a Galle call must cover Sri Lanka explicitly. Some Southeast Asian regional policies extend only to the Maldives and not to Sri Lanka — confirm your geographic coverage includes Sri Lanka before departure. Fuel is available within the harbour at reasonable rates. Reprovisioning is good for a transit stop. The UNESCO-listed Galle Fort is a highlight worth the visit even for passage-makers on a tight schedule.
